Teva Riva Peak review

Some people aren’t entirely convinced of the benefits of lighter footwear, they like to cling on to their weighty old boots. That’s fine, it’s not for everyone, but what you might do is find a boot that reduces the weight a bit but still gives you feel of an old school leather boot. These little fellows are just the job.

These boots are the Teva Riva Peak.

Teva are probably most well known for their sandals but this is a proper boot. There’s a thick leather upper with an eVent membrane. There’s a Vibram sole with an aggressive lug pattern and a substantial toe bumper. All this comes together to make a boot that’s very well suited to the UK, which is unusual for a US company.

In real life use, they feel pretty light when you put them on. My size 11s (46) weigh in at 1470g for the pair, so they won’t win any lightweight awards but that’s pretty good for a leather boot.

Cushioning is good and the supplied footbed is pretty decent, which is unusual. I did a few trips with it and it was fairly supportive. I still swapped it out for my usual Sole footbed after a while, but that’s just my personal preference.

The heel cup is good and holds the foot well in place, even on long traverses, while the toebox is very roomy indeed;  your delicate tootsies are well protected and have room to wriggle.

I have the usual problem with membrane boots here, in that I get hot and sweaty feet. I do think that I have unusually hot feet, because so many people just don’t seem to have this problem but it’s very noticeable for me. That said, the membrane did a great job of keeping the puddles and bogs out.

The sole unit is grippy and solid on rock although they’re not very precise for delicate scrambling. In the mud and grass, they do the job nicely. When it comes to snow, they are actually relatively insulating, so no cold feet. I wouldn’t stand around on the snow all night in them, but you can easily squeeze an extra season out of them for day trips.

So the end result is a decent all rounder boot that can handle what the UK weather can throw at it at a reasonable weight.

If you’re looking to cut some weight out but you’re not keen on giving up sturdy 3-4 season leather boots, these should be put straight onto your list.
