Fun for all the family: Edelrid rock shoes first look

These cheerily colour-coordinated fellows are the Typhoon, Tempest and Crocy rock shoes from Edelrid. There are several main points to consider when looking at these, but the primary one is that Dad doesn’t look after his shoes half as much as the ladies of the family.

First up is the Typhoon, which I’ve been using for around 6 months now. It’s a very aggressively lasted shoe. Fit is snug to say the least, my size 10’s take up roughly the same floor space as Kirsty’s 6’s, so that’ll give you an idea of the sizing. They are just on the cusp between rock-shoe tight and flippin’ painful, which is bang on for me, but try them on if you can before you commit.

In practice they really come into their own once the rock tips over into overhanging territory. The slingshot last makes it bite down onto the holds. They excel when it comes to edging and the e-grip sole is sensitive, so you can feel with precision what your feet are doing, which is vital on teeny holds. I like them and will be wearing them for the forseeable future or at least until I get up to 8c!

Kirsty has been using the Tempest, which is a much more comfortable wear-it-all-day shoe.

Kirsty is what you’d describe as an occasional climber these days, so comfort is a huge factor. Her old Sportivas stopped fitting after the kids arrived (who knew childbirth changed your shoe size?) so these are a treat for her feet. Performance is still great, with a good mix of edging and smearing ability. These are a good all-round shoe, handy for long sessions at the wall at lower grades, or long mountain days on greasy V.Diffs.

The third pair created much joy in our household when they arrived.

The Crocy is a kids shoe  with some expansion built in, which is handy if you’re familiar with the rate at which kids feet grow. So there’s that to consider, along with them having a crocodile on them, which is clearly the most important feature.  When you put a 4 year old in them she feels like a proper climbing rock star. Millie’s feedback is that they are fantastic and make her feet stick to the wall like spiderman. High praise indeed.

  1. Hi Michael, great review on the Edelrid shoes and i’m just after a little advice on the CROCY pair you reviewed previously. I’m looking at getting a pair for my daughter, also called Millie, for her first foray into proper rock shoes but i’m a little unsure on sizing. Do these shoes come up small? She is currently a size 10 (kids) and I’m wondering should I buy size 11 or go bigger? I know they have elastic in the heel but i’m just wondering if the shoes are true to size or not?
    Many thanks,
    Gemma & Chris

  2. Sizing is standard, the velcro is wide and tightens them down, so I’d say go larger for growth potential. They grow out of them quickly…
